Variation, Isolating Mechanisms, and Hybridization in Certain Toads.

چکیده
On the species problem the interests of genetics, taxonomy, and ecology converge to a remarkable extent, and it seems that only through coordination of the methods of these several disciplines can satisfactory progress in this field be made. Where closely-related species, or populations very nearly attaining the rank of species, are involved, the problem attains a maximum of complexity; it is just such cases, however, which appear most amenable to intensive investigation. The present article reports the results of an attempt to analyze the situation in a group of species of toads inhabiting the eastern United States.

Differential selection to avoid hybridization in two toad species.
The fitness consequences of hybridization critically affect the speciation process. When hybridization is costly, selection favors the evolution of prezygotic isolating mechanisms (e.g., mating behaviors) that reduce heterospecific matings and, consequently, enhance reproductive isolation between species (a process termed reinforcement). If, however, selection to avoid hybridization differs bet...
متن کاملPopulation admixture and high larval viability among urban toads
In terms of evolutionary biology, a population admixture of more than two distinct lineages may lead to strengthened genetic variation through hybridization. However, a population admixture arising from artificial secondary contact poses significant problems in conservation biology. In urban Tokyo, a population admixture has emerged from two lineages of Japanese common toad: native Bufo japonic...
متن کاملDiet alters species recognition in juvenile toads.
Whether environmental effects during juvenile development can alter the ontogeny of adult mating behaviour remains largely unexplored. We evaluated the effect of diet on the early expression of conspecific recognition in spadefoot toads, Spea bombifrons. We found that juvenile toads display phonotaxis behaviour six weeks post-metamorphosis. However, preference for conspecifics versus heterospec...
متن کاملFactors limiting hybridization between Penstemon spectabilis and Penstemon centranthifolius
Speciation involves the formation of reproductive isolating mechanisms such as a difference in pollinators, incompatibility between pollen tubes and stylar tissue, hybrid seed abortion, or poor growth of hybrid seedlings. We studied reproductive isolating mechanisms in naturally sympatric populations of Penstemon spectabilis Thurber and Penstemon centranthifolius (Benth.) Benth. where F1 hybrid...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Individual Variation in Behavior
Emily Schmidt: An Analysis of Individual Variation in Behavior (Under the direction of Karin Pfennig) Individual animals within a population often show differences in their behavior. Recently, scientists have begun to study the causes and consequences of individual variation in behavior explicitly rather than attributing differences to observer error or noise. The study of behavioral syndromes,...
